2010 News

22nd - 24th October

Thundersport GB's final round of the year allowed Jody to take to the track on his newly acquired Triumph 675, to see whether it would be suitable to race next year. It was a massive gamble, having not tested nor set the bike up properly, bar a cold Wednesday afternoon session at Mallory to get the bars and levers in place. The team really didn't know what to expect, but it sure kept things exciting! Thankfully the 3 15 minute test sessions proved Jody was instantly at home on the 675, he commented "it doesn't feel as outright fast as the R6, but the torque and pull out of the turns is brilliant. I also really like the light and nimble feeling the chassis has, its quite different to the R6. The R6 has been a great bike, but I've ridden the 4 Cyl 600 since I started and I really just felt like trying something different. I've been watching the 675's all year and I knew their strong points would match my strong points, so hopefully I can progress some more and become more competitive for 2011".

Qualifying went well, Jody managed to slot it in 5th place, just off the front row. He had thought he had done enough to start on the front row but sadly got bumped back one place near the end of the session. It was still a great start for first time out on the 675 and things were looking positive. For this meeting there would be 2 races on Saturday and only 1 on Sunday. Race 1 came around and the team were hoping it would be either wet or dry not in between..... No such luck in the end, it was barely a dry line 3 feet or so wide and damp all over in many places. The bike was fitted with dry tyres and this would be the first time Jody had ridden in these conditions, so we knew things would be tough. The 5th grid spot was quite wet and this hindered Jody on the start, suffering quite badly with wheel spin and he was down in 16th or 17th place on the first lap. Jody never really got going and ended the race in 10th place, which he was very disappointed with.

Race 2 on Saturday and it was completely wet after some very heavy rain. Surprisingly Jody looked happier with these conditions as he had the relevant experience (cough Anglesey any one?) and confidence in the wet tyres. A great start meant Jody's job was a little easier than usual after the first lap, where he slotted into 2nd place. He was soon on the heels of Alan Tanton and made his pass cleanly, pulling a 1.5 second gap quite quickly. Jody managed to hold pretty much a second lead all the way through the race and came home with the win, pretty much unchallenged. It was a very happy time for the team, winning the first time out on the 675 was a great feeling for us all, as it looked like the hard work and preparation, as well as the gamble to run the bike with out testing it properly first had paid off.

Race 3 came and the Jody was hope full of another strong finish. A poor start (we're working on this for 2011!) meant Jody was down in 6th or 7th place after the first lap. The leaders had managed to pull quite a gap, so Jody had his work cut out. Moving through the field quickly and Jody was into 5th place chasing down the leading group. This was no small task and Jody managed to bridge the gap and pass Seb Bulpin into 4th place by the 9th lap and set about passing 3rd, which he did and was looking to make a move for 2nd place on the last lap, but it was time for the luck to run out! As Jody entered the Craner Curves the bike lost power and Jody was forced to retire.

After a cold and wet weekend, finished off with a cold but sunny Sunday, the team were still more than happy. Jody had shown good pace on the 675 which is very encouraging for 2011. Now as the winter months are upon us, it gives the team chance to sit back and reflect on a successful season, which by all accounts is still only Jody's 2nd year of racing. The decisions and discussions will no doubt continue over the next few months before the team decide on their final plans for 2011. Ultimately we would like to see Jody move up again and take on the challenge of entering the British Championship, in the BSS Cup class racing the 675 Triumph. This will be a massive step for Jody, and one which needs to be taken seriously. The team has confidence that Jody can continue to progress and hopefully hold his own in the Supersport Cup class, one thing is for sure and that is 2011 looks even more exciting than this year already!

Jody and the team would like to thank all of those that have helped throughout the season, Mark at GO Developments, Mike at BMC Racing for the Dyno time and mapping, Motorcycle Essentials, Chase Automotive for the paint work and any one else who may of helped out. We have made some great friends in the paddock you all know who you are!

Keep an eye on the news section for any developments on the 2011 plans, as well as news from any winter tests and so on. If you would like to get involved with this exciting sport and you feel you can help out in any way for the 2011 season, please feel free to contact us with your ideas.

17th - 19th September

An action packed Mallory Park, kept the team on their toe's this weekend, with the penultimate round of the Thundersport GB Championships returning to Jody's home track where the team had more highs and lows.

Qualifying couldn't have gone better, with a great pole position lap time of 54 seconds flat, straight out of the box, meaning the start to the weekend was made a touch easier. This is the first time Jody has qualified Pole, for any Thundersport meeting which is great news for the team as it shows true progression. Jody lead the Superpole race from start to finish, all though it nearly came to an early end after the rear tyre spun on the rim and caused a bad vibration, so much so that Jody feared he may have to pull in early, but thankfully he kept things in hand with a fantastic win to start the weekend off.

Race 1 on Sunday and Jody knew the competition would be hot on his heels and true to form, Michael Price proved too quick in the closing stages of the race, with Jody struggling on the brakes suffering from arm pump, something which hadn't affected him for the last few rounds. That said, there was no denying Michaels pace and he deserved the win. Jody managed to come home in 2nd place which was great news for his championship hopes of taking 3rd place overall with Seb finishing 4th.

Race 2 was frantic from the start, Jody diced all race with Michael Price and Alan Tanton, however it would be between Jody and Alan at the end of the race. After holding the advantage on the last lap, Jody was passed by Alan entering the hair pin for the final time, although the extra speed Alan carried forced him to run wide, this gave Jody the perfect chance to hold his line and re pass Alan up the inside on the exit of the hair pin. Sadly both riders touched and Jody came worst off, ending the weekend with a disappointing dnf. It was a hard move, however it is racing and these things do happen, especially when the pace is so hot and the riders were so close.

So after all the hard work through the meeting, the team finished the weekend taking just 6 points back from Seb, making the chances of a 3rd place finish to the Thundersport F600 2010 Championship seem very unlikely. With this in mind the team may take the opportunity to use the final round as a test bed for a possible manufacturer switch for 2011. Jody has recently tested a Supersport spec Triumph 675 and feels the smoother approach to riding these bikes may suit his style better. Watch this space as they say!

See you all at Donington.

September 26th

The final round of the 2010 EMRA championships took place at the weekend and saw Jody take the F600 Championship win in style, with 2 great wins to complete a season totally unbeaten. This is the first time any competitor has managed to take a full season of wins and really has been the icing on Jody's 2010 season.

Having got stronger and stronger at Mallory all season, the team knew the title was pretty much a done thing prior to the final round, how ever to keep Jody's 100% win record for the 2010 season with EMRA, he had to beat 2009's champion Leon Jeacock who was returning to Mallory Park for the final round. Having spent all of 2009 chasing Leon we knew this was no easy task, however Jody's speed, dedication and a bit of luck meant he took 2 brilliant wins. The first race was a great battle to the end, with Leon finishing less than half a second behind. The 2nd race was somewhat easier, as Jody didn't realise that Leon had even started the race as he was missing from the grid at the start. Leon had actually been made to start from the back of the grid after arriving too late to take his start position, all though this didnt stop Leon from having a good go and he managed to finish an amazing 2nd place despite starting from the back! Jody said "I couldn't believe my eyes when I spotted Leon coming up through the final part of the Esses, just as I was exiting the Hair Pin, it really did give me the hurry up! I'm really pleased to take the final 2 wins and keep my EMRA F600 win record for 2010 at 100%, it feels unreal. If some one had told me I'd do this at the start of last year, when I was a complete Novice in my Orange bib, I would never of believed them for 1 second. Sam's been getting stronger all year too, however we started the season with the advantage and managed to finish it holding a similar advantage. I'd like to congratulate Sam on his win in the Superstock 600 Championship, its been great racing him and he's kept me honest all year!"

The Buildbase final was no exception and Jody charged home in 3rd place, taking his first Buildbase podium of the season. Sadly he missed out on 3rd in the Championship, although he is more than pleased with 4th given the fact that he didn't race in the first 2 Buildbase races, at the start of the season. This meant that Tim Howells kept a top 3 finish to his Buildbase Championship, which Jody was more than happy with after Tim suffered a massive crash exiting the Esses's in the Open race earlier in the day. Thankfully Tim is ok (ish), but was unable to take to the grid in the Buildbase final. The Buildbase final also saw Jody demolish his personal best lap time, with an amazing 53.8 second lap.

2010 has been a great year for Jody, racing with EMRA and he couldn't of asked for a better finish to the season. Hopefully he can finish the Thundersport season on a similar high.

We look forward to seeing all the EMRA regulars at the awards and presentations evening, we cant wait!

17 - 19th September

A rain washed Anglesey saw Jody take 3 decent point scoring positions, with a best finish of 4th place, just one place off the podium. The weekend got off to a great start on the test day, with Jody's lap times into the 1.10's on worn tyres. A fantastic 2 seconds quicker than Jody's last time (and only previous time) at Anglesey. The team knew that better lap times would come on new tyres, although the competition also looked very stiff. This seems to be the increasing trend at Thundersport, the lap times are getting quicker and quicker, as well as the depth of talent stretching right through the field. Qualifying went well, bar Jody mistaking a large damp patch at the tight left hander (Rocket) for untreated oil, which turned out to be drying water. This meant Jody was taking a much wider line around the patch and loosing time compared to most of the other riders who were running straight over it. Jody did say he thought they were brave, it's an on going phobia of his since a fairly big high side at Mallory last year testing, which was caused by a major oil spill. That aside Jody qualified 9th with an 11.2 , which would of easily been mid 1.10's had the track condition been slightly better. It was very surprising for such a quick time to be only 9th on the grid, but again this just shows the depth of talent at Thundersport now.

The bike was all prepped and ready for the Superpole race on Saturday, when the heavens opened and turned what was a pleasant Anglesey, into the worse conditions Jody has raced in up to date. Saturdays Superpole race went well despite the rain and saw Jody finish 6th place. Race 1 on Sunday and the conditions were even worse, although Jody pushed on and had a great 4th place finish. The weekend was ended with a 8th place in race 2, which was a little disappointing. Jody had kept the same wet on all week end, which failed to hold up for last race and despite a good start, Jody was unable too stop the rear spinning and nursed the bike back in a credible 8th place.

All in all the team and Jody are pleased with the meeting, Jody managed to close the gap on 3rd place in the championship as Seb's luck wasn't great this week end, although the team are well aware of Seb's speed and determination, so we are expecting a tough challenge for the last 2 rounds. Jody did managed to reduce the gap on the Championship leader, however it seems a distant and most unlikely possibility now.

We now look forward to the final round of EMRA at Mallory, to be followed by the penultimate round of Thundersport, which is also at Mallory.

Thankfully Mallory is a favourite track for Jody, so we're hoping for some strong results come race day!

28th - 30th August

Poor starts hampered Jody's first time at Brands Hatch over the Bank Holiday Weekend, although some excellent lap times and good racing made up for the initial lack of results.

The weekend started off with Jody Qualifying in 7th position, which was a little lower than expected, but still within 0.5 of a second of pole so the team knew outright pace shouldn't be too much of an issue over the weekend. The Superpole race was a bit of a shock to the system, being Jody's first time ever at Brands Hatch, he was not really prepared for the manic dash to the first turn, Paddock Hill which is tricky at the best of times. Jody short shifted too many gears and lost drive up to Druids which left him way down the order. He fought on and moved through the field, how ever 10th was as far as he could get. Brands is a tricky circuit to make time up and passing several slower riders saw the pack at the front pull a gap which proved to big to bridge.

Race 1 on Monday and the team were looking for a better start, sadly it was still not the start the team and Jody were hoping for. Jody managed to work his way up the order fairly quickly and was soon into 8th place and on the tail end of a group of riders fighting for 4th place. Jody had the pace to pass all of the riders so a 4th place was on the cards, until the race was red flagged on lap 6 or 7. The restart did Jody no favours as the race length was then reduced and Jody only made it as far a 9th place, which was very dissapointing.

Eager to make a better start, race 2 saw Jody in the leading group into Paddock, a close pass by another rider through Paddock meant he dropped back a few places, to around 8th. Still a much better start than the first 2 races, Jody got his head down and pushed on through the pack of riders to 4th place. It would of been nice to try and catch the leading 3 riders, however the gap was just too big so Jody played it safe and settled for the 4th place, which was the best finish of the weekend.

Thankfully the team can take several positives from the weekend, which include a best lap time of 49.1 seconds, which is a great achievement for Jodys first time at Brands Hatch. One thing Jody will remember next time he is at Brands, is to make sure his starts are spot on!

Looking forward to Anglesey, the team hope for more solid results and to hopefully make some ground back on the top 3 in the Thundersport GB F600 Championship.

See you at Anglesey.

15th August

Jody's new found confidence and bike set up saw him take two more wins at Round 5 of the EMRA Championship, extending his win tally to an unbelievable 10 out of 10 and with only one round left the Championship is within reach. The teams break through at Cadwell meant Jody was able to push on at the EMRA meeting and lower his personal best lap time down by 1/4 of a second, which in racing terms and more specifically Mallory Park terms, is a huge step forward.

After qualifying Pole in less than ideal conditions, Jody took an early lead in both F600 races and went on pretty much unchallenged, to win both races by a comfortable margin. All this despite there being some slightly tougher competition in the form of 2 BSB Superstock 600 riders. The Buildbase feature race was a little more work, racing against BSB front runner Luke Stapleford and a number of ex BSB riders on board larger machines, Jody managed to qualify 4th and finish 4th in the race, after a good battle with Mallory regular Mark Littler. Jody commented " it was a great race, with some good overtaking going on between Myself and Mark, its a shame I couldn't get past at the same time as Luke did, as it would of been great to try and follow him and pick up some more tips, as Luke is so fast around here."

Jody hopes to be able to make some more steps forward at the next round of Thundersport, which is at Brands Hatch on the Bank Holiday week end, starting on the 27th of August. It will be the first time Jody has been to Brands Hatch, but we are confident in more good results and that the recent form can be continued for the remainder of the Thundersport season.

Well see you at Brands!

6th - 8th August

Jody celebrated his maiden Thunder Sport GB win in the F600 class over the weekend at Cadwell Park, after taking a fantastic win in Saturdays Super Pole Race. During the Friday testing sessions the team found the set up which they had been looking for all year, and with that came Jody's confidence in the front end of the bike, which is something he has struggled with for some time now. This boost gave Jody the Pace to take his first Thunder Sport win, which the team are ecstatic about, especially given the fact that it was the Super Pole race which is a longer 14 lap race, something Jody had previously been struggling with, particularly at circuits as demanding as Cadwell Park.

After a positive start to the Super Pole race Jody got into a good rhythm behind Seb Bulpin and Adam Oliver, Seb and Adam had exchanged places a number of times, how ever Seb managed to make a break on Adam mid race, fortunately Jody managed to pass Adam and then set about making up some ground on Seb, sadly Seb lost the front end through Mansfield which left Jody charging into the lead. A small mistake at the mountain section allowed Adam Oliver back past, how ever Jody managed to retake Adam and go on to secure his first win of the season. Hopefully this is the break the Jody and the team have been waiting for!

Sundays races saw Jody secure two more podium finishes, with a solid pair of 2nd places. Unfortunately Jody was a held back in both races only managing to get past a number of slower riders towards the end of each race, which left him little time to make up ground on a flying Seb Bulpin, although Jody did have a good go in the 2nd race, setting the fastest lap in the process.

All in all it was a fantastic weekend for the team, confidence is back and spirits are high, we now look forward to the EMRA races at Mallory, where Jody is typically strong regardless of bike set up, and then on to the Brands Hatch round of Thunder Sport GB. The team are expecting a challenge come Brands as Jody has never been there before, fingers crossed we take the newly found confidence and build on that through out the remainder of the season.

Jody now lies 4th in the Thunder Sport GB F600 Championship - watch this space!

Jody would like to thank Graham at GLF Accessories for his help with the new Scott Leathers, Held Gloves and Arai helmets. After the little spill at Cadwell Jody was left needing some new gloves and a helmet, Grahams help and expert advice has been more than appreciated. Hopefully we may have found an improvement for Jody's arm pump, after noticing how restrictive his current leathers are Graham suggested trying out some made to measure Scott leathers, which fit a lot better and provide excellent protection.

If you need any new gear, you know where to go!

July 4th

Round 4 of the EMRA Championships at the teams local circuit Mallory Park, saw Jody extend his Championship lead with another 2 convincing wins in the F600 Ray Stringer supported series. Jody's 2010 EMRA campaign couldn't be going any better, with 8 wins from 8 starts so far this season. This is a real confidence boost for the team, we just need to work on getting the bike to feel right at other circuits now and hopefully see some podiums with Thundersport at the remaining rounds.

The weekend didn't go with out its problems though, after qualifying 2nd Jody was complaining about a lack of feel from the front end of the bike. Since the Oulton Park round of Thundersport Jody has been running Ohlin's new 30mm kit and has struggled to find a set up that feels right for him. This was confirmed with the lap times in the F600 qualifying, so with the help of LJR (Leon and Rod Jeacock and Mike from BMC Racing) we set about swapping the forks from the wet bike into the dry bike, in time for the Buildbase qualifying. It was tight but we made it, so a big thank you to the guys who helped out. This paid off as Jody knocked nearly a second off his lap time in the Buildbase qualifying and this set the course for another fantastic meeting. Things may of ended up a fair bit different if we hadn't took a gamble on swapping back to the original fork setup, its just a shame we never tried this at Oulton Park. Some times it's better the devil you know, as they say.

Jody had a great battle with Sam Middlemas in both F600 races, which was entertaining for the crowd and gave Jody a good push. Race 1 saw both riders into the 54 second lap times, with both riders making a couple of small mistakes it stayed close until the last few laps where Jody managed to break away. Race 2 started off with a slight rain shower which forced Jody to make a steady start, this allowed Sam Middlemas and Sam Ludgate past on his CBR600RR, however the rain quickly stopped and the pace picked up. Jody passed Sam Ludgate and then set about catcing and passing Sam Middlemas to take another well earned win. Sam and his 675 Triumph are both upto speed now so we are looking forward to more of the same at Round 5.

For now there is a little break again, ready for the build up to Thundersports second visit to Lincolnshire's Cadwell Park - watch this space!

June 25th - 26th

Talented competition and a lack of track time meant more tough times for Jody at Oulton Park this week end. The team had hoped to get on a track day before the meeting at Oulton, as the tracks technical and fast nature meant it would be very hard to get a decent set up in 3 sessions of testing, how ever time restrictions meant it just wasn't to be.

Upon arriving at the circuit the weather was on our side at least, although Jody did have his work cut out from the word go. The test morning turned into around 8 or 9 complete laps, maybe less, hardly enough time to even get an idea of where the track goes. Sadly this put Jody on the back foot slightly and left him down in 13th after a very brief qualifying session, which was cut short due to a number of fallen riders. The team were constantly improving the bikes setup as the weekend went on and by the end of the 1st race we had a setting that would of been ideal to start the weekend with. Race 1 saw a 12th place finish and Race 2 11th place. By the end of Race 2 Jody had a good idea where the track went and was able to push quite hard, which reflected in the respectable lap times. Unfortunately it was a little late by then, but at least the team improved through out the weekend lap time wise, even if the results were not there in the end. We feel the R6 is now at a point where Jody can start pushing a little harder at the remaining tracks, he still retains his 6th place in the Thundersport GB F600 Championship, however it would be nice to improve that throughout the remainder of the season.

Jody's lack of circuit knowledge has proved to be a slight disadvantage at times this season, especially given the rapidly increasing level the Supersport class at Thundersport GB is progressing at this year. There have been some impressive entrants so far, including riders from BSB and the Irish Superbike Championship. With this in mind the team is more than pleased with Jody's progress, after all it is only his second full season of racing. Hopefully the team will be aiming for more track time at the remaining circuits on the calendar, in order to help Jody step up a level and make a challenge for some podium finishes.

We would like to say thanks to Mark at Go Developments for his assistance this weekend, his input really helped set up wise.

Next up is round 4 of the EMRA Championship at Jody's local circuit, Mallory Park. So please check back soon for more news and results.

Thanks for reading,

The team at Jody Lees Racing.

May 29th - 31st

More ups and downs for Jody at Cadwell Park over the Bank Holiday weekend. Testing was hampered by the weather on the Friday test day which left Jody down in 12th place after first qualifying. This was improved when the weather picked up on Sunday morning, to 9th, which left Jody with plenty of work to do. A good result in the Superpole race saw Jody take 4th place, which moved him to 4th on the grid, this should of made the task ahead of him on Monday a touch easier, but such is racing this is never the way. After struggling with bad arm pump, something which seems to of come back and restricted Jody's recent progress, things went from bad to worse in Monday's races. Race 1 got off to a reasonable start, but after being passed a bit close into Park Jody was forced to take to the grass and rejoined in 12th place, due to arm pump problems this is where Jody would finish and by no means where Jody and the team expected to be. With his work cut out for Race 2 the team were hoping for a good result to take away from the weekend, a good start saw Jody slot into the top 6 how ever disaster struck at the top of the Goose Neck and Jody lost the front and was knocked unconscious. After being held a short while in the holding area and then on the grid, along with the late afternoon dip in temperature, the team can only put Jody's miss fortune down to a cold front tyre.

Not the results the team we're after, however we can take a lot away and hopefully improve things at Oulton Park. Fortunately Jody and the bike are both OK, so we have had some luck after all!

For now there is a small break in the racing calendar, allowing Jody and his family to get away on a much needed holiday. The team have a few new idea's for the rest of the season, in a bid to improve the current 6th position Jody holds in the Thundersport GB F600 championship after the first 3 rounds.

May 23rd

Round 3 of the EMRA championship was treated to some excellent weather and some excellent racing. A number of setup tweeks helped Jody take the win in both F600 races, with lap times into the 54's. The icing on the cake for Jody was undoubtedly the excellent performance he put in the Buildbase race, where he was up against some talented opposition on much more powerful machines. Jody took a fantastic 4th place on his Yamaha R6 machine, which if bad arm pump hadn't held him back, may of been top the 3.

This is a breath of fresh air for Jody, after struggling so much at Snetterton. We still have a lot of work to do through out the rest of the season, to stay competitive within the ever increasing level at Thundersport GB, but we are still making good progress and we hope for some good results at Cadwell Park next weekend.

Jody's EMRA campaign is in full strength now, with 6 wins from 6 starts it couldn't be better. The team just need to build on this and hopefully improve the Thundersport GB challange over the few rounds.

Keep checking back for more updates soon!

May 1st - 3rd

Tough times for Jody at Snetterton, struggling with setup all weekend Jody managed to salvage some points with 3 top 10 finishes, the best being a 6th place. Changable weather and a lack of circuit knowledge contributed to the results this weekend, how ever there is clearly a lot of work to do on the bikes. Jody has had little time to get out testing over winter and the start of the season, with all of 2010's testing so far taking place at Mallory Park. Over the next few weeks we will be looking at Oulton and Cadwell for some serious test days, to get Jody back upto speed.

This leaves Jody 6th in the Thundersport GB F600 Championship, so theres some work to do come Cadwell Park, to try and close the gap on the Championship leaders.

The team are now focusing on getting the bikes setup to suit Jody's style, as we havent actually found a good solid setup that works well everywhere.

Watch this space!

April 25th

Round 2 of the EMRA championship see's Jody take another 2 impressive wins, despite struggling to find a good setup with the bikes.

This is a great result and another real boost to Jody's 2010 EMRA Championship campaign, which couldnt get off to a better start with 4 wins from 4 starts. Lets hope things can keep progressing in the same direction!

Febuary 2010

Well it seems like the winter is dragging on for ever, this time last year I had been out 3 or 4 times by now, I cant wait for some decent track time as it seems like for ever, since I was last on the bike.

Some good news though, the bikes are all singing and dancing, ready for the 2010 season. I hope you all like the new colour scheme, the 2010 colours should help us stand out a bit, especially if we make it on to the box.

We are aiming for a more professional approach to our racing this year, we feel we have learnt an enormous amount in such a short space of time and now we have a package which we hope will be competitive in the fiercely fought Thundersport F600 class. We understand there is still a lot more to take in, but Jody has learnt fast and got up to speed in a very short amount of time. Remember this time last year Jody was still a genuine Novice!

Jody and the team would welcome any potential sponsors, to get in touch should you wish to discuss possible options on sponsorship packages. We have a different approach to many on our idea of sponsorship, we are not asking for some one else to pay for our racing this year, we are looking for partners who are interested in getting involved with this exciting and action packed sport. Whether its just a small contribution or a larger sum, Jody Lees Racing welcomes the prospect of any sponsor coming on board. We can give you in return, the chance of T.V exposure, various media and online exposure, as well a whole host of other benefits. Please email Jody for more information on various sponsorship opportunities.

For now, lets hope this weather gets better soon, the season's opening round is less than 4 weeks away.

Thanks for reading

Jody
